Ingredients

Halloween Dirt Cups
  • 20 whole Oreo cookies crushed into fine crumbs
  • 1 3.9-ounce box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 8-ounce tub whipped topping thawed
  • 12 whole gummy worms 2 per serving
  • Halloween sprinkles optional, for decorating

Equipment

  • 6 clear parfait cups
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rubber spatula
  • Measuring cups
  • Food processor or zip-top bag and rolling pin

Method

Prepare the Oreo Crumbs
  1. Crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs using a food processor or a zip-top bag and rolling pin. Set aside.
Make the Chocolate Pudding
  1. Add the instant chocolate pudding mix and milk to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk thoroughly until smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Let the pudding sit for approximately 5 minutes to thicken.
  4. Gently fold the thawed whipped topping into the thickened pudding until completely combined and no white streaks remain.
Assemble the Dirt Cups
  1. Add a small layer of crushed Oreo cookies to the bottom of each of the 6 clear parfait cups.
  2. Spoon a layer of the chocolate pudding mixture over the cookie crumbs.
  3. Add another layer of Oreo crumbs over the pudding.
  4. Continue layering the pudding mixture and cookie crumbs until the cups are filled, finishing with Oreo crumbs on top to resemble dirt.
Decorate and Serve
  1. Garnish each dirt cup with 2 gummy worms and Halloween sprinkles, if using.
  2. Serve immediately, or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Smooth pudding: Whisk the pudding and milk thoroughly before allowing it to thicken to help prevent lumps.
  • Folding: Fold the whipped topping gently into the pudding until no streaks remain.
  • Cookie crumbs: Crush the Oreos finely for the most realistic dirt-like appearance.
  • Scaling: Instead of individual cups, the dessert can be layered in a 9×13-inch baking dish for a larger crowd.
  • Cookie variations: Different Oreo flavors may be used to change the flavor while keeping the same dirt-cup presentation.
  • Vegetarian note: If preparing this as a strictly vegetarian dessert, check the gummy worms because some brands contain gelatin.
  • Make ahead: Assemble the cups ahead of time, cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • Storage: Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: Do not freeze, as the pudding and whipped topping texture may change after thawing.
