Prepare the Cereal
- Place the Rice Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl, preferably one with a secure lid, and set aside.
Make the Chocolate Peanut Butter Coating
- Add the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and salted butter to a medium microwave-safe bowl.
- Microwave at 50% power for 1 minute. Stir, then microwave for another 30 seconds.
- Stir until the mixture is completely smooth, then stir in the vanilla extract.
Coat the Chex
- Pour the warm chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the Rice Chex cereal.
- Gently stir until all of the cereal is evenly coated, taking care not to crush the Chex.
Add the Powdered Sugar
- Add the powdered sugar to the coated cereal.
- Secure the lid firmly on the bowl and shake until the cereal pieces are evenly coated in powdered sugar.
Serve
- Serve immediately or allow the Muddy Buddies to cool and set before storing.
Notes
- Also called Puppy Chow: Muddy Buddies are commonly known as Puppy Chow and are a classic chocolate-peanut butter Chex snack.
- Yield: The original recipe does not specify a serving yield, so the servings field has been left blank.
- Microwaving: Heat the chocolate mixture at 50% power to reduce the chance of scorching the chocolate. Stir thoroughly after each heating interval.
- Mix gently: Fold the chocolate mixture into the cereal carefully so the Rice Chex pieces stay intact.
- Powdered sugar: A large bowl with a tightly fitting lid makes it easy to shake the cereal until evenly coated.
- Storage: Once completely cooled, store Muddy Buddies in an airtight container at room temperature.
- Serving: This recipe works well for parties, holiday snack tables, lunchbox treats, and casual snacking.
