Cook Time 18 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings: 12 ghosts
Course: Appetizer, Snack
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

For the ghosts
  • 6 hot dogs cut in half
  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed, kept cold
For the shiny coating
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water or milk
For dipping
  • ketchup

Method

  1. Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut your hot dogs in half. Then slice the puff pastry into 12 equal squares, one for each hot dog piece.
  3. Stand a hot dog piece up in the middle of a pastry square. Gather the pastry up and around it so it looks like a little ghost with a floaty bottom.
  4. Cut two small holes for the eyes and one bigger hole for the mouth.
  5. Set the ghosts on your baking sheet, leaving a little space between them.
  6. Whisk the egg with the water or milk. Brush it lightly over the pastry.
  7. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the pastry is puffed up and golden.
  8. Serve warm with ketchup on the side.

Notes

  • Keep the pastry cold while you work. If it gets soft and sticky, pop it in the fridge for 10 minutes.
  • Pat the hot dogs dry before wrapping so the pastry stays crisp.
  • Leftovers keep in the fridge for 2 days. Reheat in the oven, not the microwave, so they crisp up again.
